Flood Watch in effect for Portsmouth area
PORTSMOUTH, R.I. — The National Weather Service (NWS), Taunton office, has issued a Flood Watch for the Portsmouth area.
The Flood Watch is in effect from Monday afternoon to Tuesday morning.
Heavy rain is expected for the Portsmouth area, starting Monday afternoon and continuing into Tuesday morning. Those in low lying areas prone to flooding should prepare.

FLOOD WATCH IN EFFECT FROM MONDAY AFTERNOON THROUGH TUESDAY MORNING... THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN TAUNTON HAS ISSUED A * FLOOD WATCH FOR EASTERN MASSACHUSETTS EXCEPT CAPE COD AND THE ISLANDS AS WELL AS RHODE ISLAND EXCEPT BLOCK ISLAND. * FROM MONDAY AFTERNOON THROUGH TUESDAY MORNING. * AREAS OF HEAVY RAINFALL WILL PUSH ACROSS THE WATCH AREA BY LATE MONDAY AFTERNOON AND CONTINUE INTO EARLY TUESDAY MORNING. RAINFALL RATES MAY EXCEED AN INCH PER HOUR AT TIMES. TOTAL RAINFALL AMOUNTS WILL RANGE FROM 2 TO 2.5 INCHES IN THE WATCH AREA...WITH THE HEAVIEST RAINFALL EXPECTED TO OCCUR LATE MONDAY AFTERNOON AND MONDAY NIGHT. HIGHER AMOUNTS ARE POSSIBLE WHERE HEAVY RAIN BANDS MOVE ACROSS THE SAME AREA. * FLOODING OF URBAN...POOR DRAINAGE AND LOW LYING AREAS IS THE GREATEST THREAT. SMALLER RIVERS AND STREAMS WITH FAST RESPONSE TIMES ARE ALSO SUSCEPTIBLE TO FLOODING DUE TO RAPID RUNOFF FROM INTENSE RAINFALL RATES. WIDESPREAD MAIN STEM RIVER FLOODING SHOULD REMAIN IN THEIR BANKS. PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... A FLOOD WATCH MEANS THERE IS A POTENTIAL FOR FLOODING BASED ON CURRENT FORECASTS. YOU SHOULD MONITOR LATER FORECASTS AND BE ALERT FOR POSSIBLE FLOOD WARNINGS. THOSE LIVING IN AREAS PRONE TO FLOODING SHOULD BE PREPARED TO TAKE ACTION SHOULD FLOODING DEVELOP.
