This performance marks the first in Common Fence Music’s new Best of New England miniseries, which highlights leading folk music artists from across New England.

Ranked by Rolling Stone magazine as one of the top ten “must-see” Americana acts of 2015, Cambridge, MA-based Session Americana brings an energy and raucousness rarely seen in live folk music.

Comprised of five main members, all of whom have had reputable careers in roots music and folk-pop performing, recording and writing for artists such as Aimee Mann, Mary Black and Patty Griffin, the band downplays their individual successes by modeling their performances on community-centric Irish seisiúns

On stage, Ry Cavanaugh (guitar/vocals), Billy Beard (drums), Dinty Child (keyboard/accordian/vocals), Kimon Kirk (bass/vocals), and Jim Fitting (harmonica/vocals) gather around a folding bar table to which they bring original work, Americana roots classics and an invitation to the audience to share in their revelry.

Performing everything from blues to ballads, folk rock to country, Session Americana deliver a concert experience that is uniquely fun and engaging, or what they themselves describe as a “modern hootenanny.”

The group’s most recent album, the critically-acclaimed Great Shakes (a collaborative effort with singer-songwriter Jefferson Hamer), exhibits their talent for musical partnership.

For their April 1 performance at Common Fence Music, Session Americana will be joined by fiddle player and vocalist Laura Cortese, who has performed with Pete Seeger, Band of Horses and Arc Iris in addition to touring extensively with her own band, the Dance Cards.

This performance is part of the Common Fence Music Picnic Series. Concert-goers are invited to bring food and beverages to enjoy during the performances.

Seasonal soups, homemade refreshments and soft-drinks will also be available for purchase. The hall is fully accessible.

Common Fence Music is a non-profit arts organization founded in 1993 with the mission to make folk, roots and world music performances and educational activities accessible to Aquidneck Island and Southern New England communities.
