With a career spanning three decades, renowned singer/songwriter John Gorka is a master of wordplay, skillfully interweaving story, poetry and song. He demonstrates an effortless ability to shift between humor and beauty, wooing audiences with his rich baritone and versatility on piano and guitar.

A long-time friend of Common Fence Music, John continues to build a following of loyal and affectionate fans with his understated stage presence and memorable melodies.

After building a reputation as an acoustic folk singer and songwriter, first as a college student in eastern Pennsylvania, and then in New York City and Boston during the late 1970s and early 80s, John’s first album, I Know, was released by Minnesota’s Red House Records in 1987 to much acclaim.

Later signing with High Street Records (an imprint of Windham Hill) in 1989, John worked tirelessly both in the studio and on the road, developing a following that earned him much popularity and success throughout the 1990s’ Folk Revival. He quickly joined the ranks of such notable folk artists as Suzanne Vega, Bill Morrissey and Shawn Colvin, and shared tours of the United States and Europe with numerous friends, including Nanci Griffith and Mary Chapin Carpenter.

He landed his music video for the single “When She Kisses Me” on VH-1 and CMT, and was featured on Austin City Limits, CNN and other television programming.

Despite his success within the industry, John returned to Red House Records in 1998, after releasing five albums with High Street Records. Appreciative of the artistic integrity that Red House Records represents, John began recording new work that highlighted his lyrics and attention to detail, releasing five albums between 1998 and 2010.

This period also brought about new collaborations with artists such as Ani Difranco, Alice Peacock and Patti Larkin. In 2010, he and friends Lucy Kaplansky (who will be performing at Common Fence Music on Saturday, April 29th) and Eliza Gilkyson released an album together under the name Red Horse. Receiving much praise from critics and fans alike, the album made it onto the Billboard Folk Charts and was featured heavily on folk radio.

This performance is part of the Common Fence Music Picnic Series.

Concert-goers are invited to bring food and beverages to enjoy during the performances. Seasonal soups, homemade refreshments and soft-drinks will also be available for purchase. The hall is fully accessible.
