Historical society hosts tour for third-graders

PORTSMOUTH, R.I. — The Portsmouth Historical Society recently welcomed 3 classes of third-graders from Melville Elementary School at the museum and historic buildings. 

A total of 75 students and 18 parents and teachers in three groups arrived at the society last Wednesday, greeted by Society President Jim Garman and other society members.

They had an opportunity to see this year’s exhibits in the museum, tour the upstairs meeting room, “attend” the first day of school in the society’s one-room schoolhouse (built in 1725) and visit the “Old Town Hall (dating from about 1840) to see the society’s collection of historic vehicles and farm tools.

The tour was organized by society member Gloria Schmidt in conjunction with Erika Magilton from Melville Elementary School.
