Time for chouriço! St. Anthony Feast kicks off Thursday

PORTSMOUTH, R.I. — It’s time for chouriço! The 89th annual Feast of St. Anthony will begin this Thursday, July 13, at the Portsmouth Portuguese American Citizens Club. 

The annual festival, which includes food, games, carnival rides, entertainment, and more, starts at noon on Thursday at the club, located at 35 Power St. (off East Main Road). 

Food, including the real St. Anthony Feast chouriço sandwich, will be served every day starting at noon.

The carnival rides, provided by Rockwell Amusements, will open at 5 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and at noon on Sunday. On Thursday and Sunday, wrist bands will be available at $20 each. 


The annual Feast Car Show will be held Thursday at 5 p.m. followed by entertainment by “Mister Chubb.” 


Friday entertainment will be provided by “Dirty Deeds” at 8:30 p.m. 


A “dunk tank,” starting at 3 p.m., will benefit the scholarship fund.

Join the ice cream social from 3 to 5 p.m. and build your own sundae and decorate 2 sugar cookies! A hot roast beef sandwich dinner will be served beginning at 5 p.m. 

The transferal of Saint Anthony from Carlone’s Florist to the Club will begin at 6 p.m., followed by a concert with Saint Isabella Band of Bristol. At 9 p.m., music will be provided by the Downcity Band.


On Sunday, the Procession of Saint Anthony will leave the Club at 10 a.m. and proceed to Saint Anthony Church for 10:30 Mass.

Following Mass, free Portuguese soup will be served to all at the Club.

Portuguese music and dancing will begin at 12:30 p.m. by Folclorico do Nossa Senora de Fatima.

The live auction of donated items will begin at 1 p.m. All donations should be at the Club by Saturday, July 15.

“Our Feast is open to all,” according to the club Facebook page. “Please come and enjoy the food, games, music, fun and our Portuguese Heritage.”
