PORTSMOUTH, R.I. — The Portsmouth Town Council will discuss increasing parking fines by 100 percent at its next council meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 15.
The council will meet for its regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 15, due to the Monday holiday, Victory Day.
Among the new items to be discussed is an increase in parking fines.
The current fine for illegal parking in town is $15. The newly proposed parking fine is $30 for most offenses, double the current rate, and $50 for more serious offenses, such as parking in a handicapped spot.
According to town officials, the parking fines have not increased since 1991.

The council meeting will begin at 6 p.m. at Town Hall, 2200 East Main Road, with an executive session. The public session will begin at 7 p.m.
