5th annual Four Bridges Ride peddles into town this weekend

PORTSMOUTH, R.I. — The 5th annual Four Bridges Ride, sponsored by the Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority (RITBA), will peddle into town this Sunday, Sept. 17.

Cyclists will have an opportunity to pedal across four of Aquidneck Island’s major bridges in a 26-mile course that provides stunning views and a tour of some of Rhode Island’s most beautiful coastal communities.

One hundred percent of the proceeds from the event will be donated to Save the Bay in their efforts to protect and conserve Narragansett Bay. Gray Matter Marketing produces the event.

The ride will begin at 7 a.m. at Park & Ride on Route 1A in North Kingstown.

Participants will cross the Verrazzano (Jamestown), Pell (Newport), Sakonnet River, and Mt. Hope bridges, and finish near the campus of Roger Williams University in Bristol. The bridges vary in height and grade with the highest and steepest being the Pell Bridge with a height of 207 feet and an incline grade of 4.8 percent.

All participants are required to register prior to the event, wear a helmet and obey all traffic laws throughout the course. While strict safety measures are in place throughout the course, no roads will be closed to traffic during this ride.

Registration to participate in the ride is now open and volunteer opportunities are also available.

A ride of this nature requires tremendous planning and the cooperation of all seven communities, their police departments, the Rhode Island Department of Transportation, State Police, and from all participants and volunteers.

The Gray Matter Marketing Team, RITBA and all of the event partners are looking forward to the event!

For more information and to register for the ride, visit Online registration will close on Thursday at midnight.
