Town Council president asks residents to help clear storm drains

PORTSMOUTH, R.I. — With the potential for flooding this weekend, Town Council President Keith Hamilton urges Portsmouth residents to help clear storm drains around town.

Hamilton posted the following on Facebook Wednesday: 

With higher temperatures, expected rainfall and snow buildup, Portsmouth could see flooding starting Friday. The weather outlook from the National Weather Service (NWS) shows rain for Friday and Saturday. 

Rain. High near 56. Breezy, with a south wind 11 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 34 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%.

Friday Night
Rain. Low around 47. Chance of precipitation is 100%.

Rain, mainly before 10am. High near 54. Chance of precipitation is 80%.

The NWS has posted the following hazardous weather outlook for the Portsmouth area. 

There is a moderate risk for heavy rainfall which could lead to areas
of urban and poor drainage flooding Friday and Saturday. Snow melt
could exacerbate the flood risk.

Hamilton asks residents to help the Department of Public Works clear about 3,000 drains in town before Friday. Residents should check drains near their own homes.
