Fire marshal identifies body found after fire

PORTSMOUTH, R.I. — Officials at the state fire marshal’s office have confirmed the identity of a body found after a fire damaged three homes in Common Fence Point on Feb. 7.

According to the Associated Press, the state fire marshal’s office identified the victim as Richard Kanauss.

Kanauss lived in Common Fence Point for more than 30 years, according to the Common Fence Point Improvement Association (CFPIA). The neighborhood group identified the victim on Feb. 9 on social media and in an emailed newsletter.

The CFPIA is holding various events this weekend, including a Lap of Love and benefit show, to raise funds for victims of the fire. The group also encourages residents to leave flowers at the CFP sign starting Wednesday.

On Feb. 7, at 2:36 a.m., members of the Portsmouth Police and Fire Departments were dispatched to a house on Narragansett Boulevard in Common Fence Point for a report of a fire. Neighboring fire departments also responded to the scene.

The fire later spread and damaged three homes in total. The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
