Town honors 2 with Portsmouth Award
PORTSMOUTH, R.I. — The town of Portsmouth honored two individuals with its annual Portsmouth Award, which recognizes excellence in professional and community leadership.
The 2018 Portsmouth Award recognized the community contributions of John Brady and the late Judi Staven.
A member of the Glen Manor House Authority for more than 23 years, Brady held many positions during his tenure on the board, including chairman, co-chairman, and currently secretary.
Brady was responsible for the development of the Glen Manor House mission statement and was instrumental in the creation of a non-profit arm of the organization, the Friends of the Glen Manor House.
He strives to “restore, maintain and preserve The Glen Manor House for the enjoyment of current and future generations of Portsmouth residents,” according to the award. He also developed the caretaker position.
“John epitomizes the meaning of contributions for the good of the community through his participation and involvement in the Glen Manor House Authority and Friends of the Glen Manor House. He has given most generously of his time, energy and talent for the betterment of Portsmouth,” according to the award.
A longtime resident of Portsmouth, Staven held many positions in the town, including Town Councilor, and member of the Portsmouth Solid Waste/Recycling Committee and Citizens Interested in the Comprehensive Community Plan Committee.
From the Portsmouth Award:
Judi served as a watchdog over town spending items and made sure her position was known at meetings, including pouring over the budget and asking tough questions;
Judi cared about the costs that our senior citizens on fixed incomes would have to pay for town services. She always advocated in public and in private meetings with the Town’s Department heads that she wanted a clean safe town and that these were the services that needed to be delivered for our residents;
Judi and her dedication to this Town will be sorely missed.
Both Portsmouth Awards were presented at the Town Council meeting on Monday evening.
