Bristol woman charged with DUI after Mt. Hope Bridge crash

PORTSMOUTH, R.I. — Portsmouth police arrested and charged a Bristol woman after a crash on Mt. Hope Bridge Tuesday evening.

On Tuesday, Dec. 18, at approximately 6:47 p.m., officers were notified about a vehicle traveling from Bristol heading towards the Mt. Hope Bridge. The vehicle was described as a red Toyota, which was seen operating erratically, traveling between lanes and fluctuating between various speeds.

As officers were traveling to the area, the vehicle collided with another vehicle that was traveling in the westbound lane, coming to a rest next to the railing of the bridge.

Portsmouth police arrested a Bristol woman after a crash on Mt. Hope Bridge Tuesday. The woman was also transported to the hospital for injuries.

According to witnesses, the red Toyota was traveling eastbound from Bristol onto the Mt. Hope Bridge, crossed the double yellow lines and struck a vehicle traveling westbound.

The operator of the red Toyota displayed signs of intoxication, according to police.

The operator, identified as Jennifer Marie Cupolo, 44, of 38 Opechee Drive, Bristol, was placed under arrest and charged with driving under the influence, first offense, and refusal to submit to a chemical test based on observations, personal contact, and witness statements.

Cupolo was transported to the hospital for treatment of injuries. No other injuries were reported during this investigation.

Upon arrival at the hospital, the operator refused any additional testing, according to police. Cupolo was released from custody with a summons to appear in Second District Court.
