Driver charged with DUI after vehicle crashes through wall

PORTSMOUTH, R.I. — A Little Compton woman was charged with driving under the influence, second offense, after a vehicle crashed through a wall on Middle Road. 

On Tuesday, Jan. 8, at approximately 3:01 p.m., officers were dispatched to Middle Road at Mill Lane for the report of a motor vehicle accident.

Upon arrival, the officer observed that a vehicle, a 2010 Chevrolet, had crashed through a stone wall outside of a Middle Road residence.

The officer made contact with the operator, who displayed obvious signs of intoxication, according to police.

Officers arrested Susan Mary Sherman, 59, of 57 Francis Lane, Little Compton.

Police also observed a bottle of brandy in the vehicle.

The operator was transported to a local hospital for injuries and further testing.

Upon arrival at the hospital, Sherman declined any further testing. She was charged with DUI, second offense; refusal to submit to a chemical test; and failure to maintain proper control of a vehicle.
