Torch Run to be held despite icy weather

PORTSMOUTH, R.I. — The MLK Jr. Birthday Celebration Committee will host the annual 8- mile Torch Run, sponsored by the Newport Chapter of the NAACP. The event will be held snow or sleet unless police deem it too dangerous.

The run begins at 9 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 21, from the First Rhode Island Black Regiment Monument in Portsmouth and ends at Thompson Middle School in Newport.

Multiple NS Newport commands will participate, including the Naval Academy Prep School, Marine Corps Detachment Newport, Surface Warfare Officer’s School Command, Naval Health Clinic New England and Navy Supply Corps School. The run is followed by an MLK Birthday Program beginning at 9:30 a.m. inside Thompson Middle School in Newport and featuring music by Navy Band Northeast Brass Quintet. The program will focus on diversity and the value of differences.
