Portsmouth High School senior wins $500 scholarship

PORTSMOUTH, R.I. — The Wickford Art Association (WAA) recently presented its annual Scholarship Program awards to three Rhode Island public high school senior art students with a fourth award presented by the Rhode Island Art Educators Association.

The four winners received his or her own public art exhibit at the Wickford Art Association, a one-year WAA membership and an invitation to exhibit at the 57th Wickford Art Festival on July 13 and 14, 2019.

Each Rhode Island public high school chooses one senior art student for award consideration and the competition uses National Scholastic Standards overseen by the Rhode Island Art Educators Association. The four winning students received cash scholarships to use towards college.

The Wickford Art Association Scholarship Program winners are:

1st Place – $1,500: Arianna Deal from Cranston High School West, Cranston, RI. Educator: Valerie Bruzzi

2nd Place – $1,000: Chase Goulet from North Kingstown High School, North Kingstown, RI. Educator: Janice Strain

3rd Place – $500: Laura Heffernan from Portsmouth High School, Portsmouth, RI. Educator: Krista Hook

The Rhode Island Art Education Association winner is:

President’s Award – $500: Emma Naughton from Lincoln High School, Lincoln, RI. Educator: Wendy Feldman

Honorable Mentions awarded to:

Sydney Austin from Hope, RI, Scituate High School, Art Educator: Wendy Feldman;

Grace Dallas from West Greenwich, RI, Exeter West Greenwich Regional High School, Art Educator: Elizabeth Lind;

Emily Fontes, from Cranston, RI, Cranston High School East, Art Educator: Jill Cyr and

Tess Gibson from Middletown, RI, Middletown High School, Art Educator: Susanne Suprock

The four WAA Scholarship Program winners are also invited to exhibit their artwork during the 57th Wickford Art Festival in Wickford Village on July 13 and 14, 2019. The festival experience will help build their resume and teach the business side of art, including exhibiting their artwork to approximately 50,000 festival attendees and providing the opportunity to meet other professional artists and art collectors. Admission to the gallery and festival is free and open to the public.

The Wickford Art Association is a non-profit organization with 450 members from Rhode Island and New England. The association hosts art shows and classes in its gallery at 36 Beach Street in North Kingstown, and has produced the Wickford Art Festival every July since 1962.  Wickford Art Association is dedicated to educating, encouraging and inspiring artists and art lovers of all ages throughout the community.
