Portsmouth Historical Society to Open for Season

PORTSMOUTH, R.I. — The Portsmouth Historical Society will open its museum and buildings to the public for the season this May.

The museum and buildings will open beginning on Sunday, May 26, from 2-5 p.m.

The museum will contain several new exhibits created by the society curator’s committee with the theme of “Evolving: Out with the Old, In with the New” contrasting vintage items from our collection with their modern counterparts. Also, featured in the Old Town Hall is a display of “Portsmouth’s Farm Heritage.”

The society will be open on Sundays through Columbus Day in October.

The purpose of the society is to preserve, protect and promote Portsmouth’s unique history as the second oldest town in Rhode Island, being founded in 1638.

The organization has grown from less than a hundred members to more than 600 individual and family members over the past few years. You can learn more about the benefits of membership and details of upcoming events on the society website: www.portsmouthhistorical.org.
