PORTSMOUTH, R.I. — Town Administrator Richard A. Rainer is recommending a familiar name to serve as Portsmouth’s next police chief.
Col. Brian Peters, currently interim chief of the Bristol Police Department and former deputy police chief of the Portsmouth Police Department, is being recommended for the department’s top job.
The recommendation comes after Chief Thomas Lee announced his retirement in early June. Chief Lee’s retirement is not effective until Sept. 6.
Col. Peters began with the Portsmouth Police Department as a patrol officer in 1998 and worked his way up through the department until serving as deputy chief of police in 2018.

The Portsmouth Town Council will discuss the appointment at Monday night’s council meeting, which begins at 7 p.m. at Town Hall.
