With so much attention on the roof of The Elms, where restoration work is underway, it seems like a perfect time to examine the intriguing statues looking down on Bellevue Avenue.
Sitting on the left corner of the roof as you face The Elms is Zeus, king of the gods in ancient Greek mythology. This soft limestone statue depicts Zeus listening to Thetis, a sea nymph and the mother of the hero Achilles, as he holds aloft a thunderbolt while an eagle gazes up at him. The statue was provided by Jules Allard and Sons for The Elms' owner Edward Julius Berwind circa 1910.
