On this date in 1897, M.H. Cannon (below left) of Utah became the first woman state senator in the United States. It would not be until 1920 that the 19th Amendment was adopted and it would take the efforts of thousands of women, from M.H. Cannon to Alva Vanderbilt (seen in the photo below right at a Marble House suffrage rally), to achieve this victory.
