Have you ever given your home a truly thorough cleaning, hitting every crevice, every nook, every hard-to-reach surface? Now imagine doing it without any chemical cleaning products – no Windex, no Pledge, no Pine-Sol.
That’s what’s going on at Marble House right now and through the next several weeks until it reopens February 14. Ten caretakers are working eight hours a day to painstakingly clean all rooms, furniture, textiles and decorative objects, using fine brushes, cotton swabs and little sponges without cleaning solutions. It’s a time-consuming process; for example, a chest of drawers might take two full days to clean every surface, inside and out.
Meanwhile our professional conservators will work on some pieces that might need special treatment and our Properties Department will do some touch-up painting and refreshing where needed.
Even something as common and innocuous as dust can wear down surfaces over time, so this work is essential to maintaining the integrity of our rooms and collections.
