In a place like Marble House, every detail tells a story. One of our current research fellows, Mathilde Tollet, is studying the artistic wrought iron in the mansions and has been delving into the details of the elaborate Jules Allard-designed railing along the main staircase at Marble House. Her research has confirmed how close the connections are between this grand Newport mansion and its models in France.

Take for example the gilded bronze “trophies” along the railing that depict mythological themes: Hercules fighting the Nemean Lion, Tritons fighting a sea monster, the shield of the Amazons and the Medusa shown in the photo above. Mathilde has studied the original models for these designs, which are based on sculptures in a garden at Versailles, and has seen drawings by the original Versailles sculptors from the late 17th century that match the images in the Marble House bronzes.

Mathilde will share fascinating details of her research during our Emerging Scholars Colloquium on February 8 at Isaac Bell House. This program is presented in collaboration with The Decorative Arts Trust. For more information, contact emarchi@newportmansions.org.
