Happy Birthday, Maude Wetmore.
A founder and first president of the Preservation Society of Newport County, Maude was one of the signers of the Articles of Association that were certified by the state of Rhode Island on August 2, 1945.
Her home, Chateau-sur-Mer, where she lived with her sister Edith, would one day be part of the Preservation Society’s collection of houses. Built by her grandfather, William Shepard Wetmore, Chateau was completed in 1852 and updated by her father, Senator (and Governor) George Peabody Wetmore in the 1870s. The house was purchased by the Preservation Society in 1969 after the death of Edith, who outlived Maude by 15 years.
