After six weeks of intensive cleaning and conservation work, we are happy to announce Marble House will reopen for tours tomorrow at 10 a.m., as originally scheduled.
One of the major projects accomplished in time for the reopening was the restoration of a 3-by-6-foot plaster ceiling panel in the Gold Room. Because of corrosion to the zinc nails that held the ornamental pieces in place, the panel was taken down and disassembled, as shown in the photo below, then carefully put back together using corrosion-resistant nails and backing board. The bottom photo shows Chief Conservator Patricia Miller working on the panel Tuesday after it was reattached.
While this particular project is now complete, we will continue to monitor the ceilings in this room and all others in our houses, performing maintenance where necessary. Thanks to our conservation and caretaking staffs for their patient and meticulous work!
