Painting conservators Dawn D’Aluisio and John Lippert reinstall an original oil-on-canvas ceiling painting by Allard et Fils at Rosecliff.
Art Restoration at Rosecliff
The Preservation Society staff keeps a sharp eye on everything in the houses – even the ceilings. In 2018, conservators observed that one of the 12 oval ceiling paintings in the Rosecliff Ballroom had become partially detached. They discovered the painting had many previous repairs that had failed, putting it at risk of further deterioration.
The 6-foot-diameter painted canvas was removed and treated by painting conservators John Lippert and Dawn D’Aluisio of Foreground Conservation. The painting was cleaned, relined and inpainted to restore the surface where it was lost. Last week, the more than 100-year-old work was reinstalled.
